Jane Ekin-Smyth | Consultant
Jane Ekin-Smyth is a Consultant in O'Loughlins Lawyers Litigation Group practising exclusively in the area of Family Law.
Jane was awarded a Bachelor of Law in 1982 from the University of Adelaide, and a Graduate Diploma in Legal Practice in 1983 from the University of South Australia. She regularly attends continuing legal education sessions.
Jane joined O'Loughlins in 2018 after working for over 30 years in legal practice exclusively in the area of Family Law. Jane operated her own Family Law Practice for nearly 20 years and has extensive experience in all areas of Family Law.
Jane has appeared personally in the Family Law Courts on countless occasions during the course of her career which has spanned decades. She has personally seen significant changes in the Family Law System.
She has represented clients in negotiations, conciliation conferences, formal and informal mediations, and in Court. Jane has also appeared in other jurisdictions such as the Magistrates Court, the District Court, the Supreme Court and briefed counsel in the High Court of Australia.
Jane's emphasis is to assist her clients to explore all available avenues, with a view to settling a matter, without the need to go to Court. Bearing in mind the unique nature of Family Law, and the fact generally speaking the parties must maintain a relationship after their dispute is finalised, in her view, litigation is a last resort.

This is what some of Jane's satisfied clients have to say about her:
Self-Employed, Regional Client
My decision to seek professional legal advice in navigating a safe pathway to post-marriage independence has to be one of the most important decisions I have made.
Much in the same way we seek professional medical advice if we are ill or we may engage a tradesperson to fix an issue around the house or service our car, the peace of mind that comes with guidance from a lawyer who specialises in family law is priceless.
In my experience it was Jane’s ability to pragmatically and succinctly guide me through the necessary steps from that initial conversation, to quickly reaching a point of closure in securing a legally binding settlement, which offered both stability and confidence during an emotionally trying time.
Ensuring the security of the current and future financial and practical needs of you and your children is paramount. Importantly, this extends beyond the material things but it’s also about keeping your self-esteem and dignity intact too. Current day society dictates that no two relationships are the same, the way they are formed and; if they break down, the way they are dissolved. Jane’s experience was evident from the outset. Empathy and sensitivity and when needed, a firm hand, underpinned each transaction.
Some may hesitate at the perceptions of the cost associated with going down the path of engaging legal counsel, I would argue that the cost may be far greater if you do not.
Thank you Jane for your guidance, attention to detail and for applying the care factor.

I can highly recommend Jane Ekin-Smyth to anyone requiring an exceptionally skilled lawyer in the area of Family Law.
Jane is an excellent lawyer to engage in this complex area as she has acquired extensive experience, skill and wisdom together with a very calm and supportive manner.
Her ability to explain the complexities and the vagaries that did arise in the process helped make a difficult process that much easier for me to understand and cope with.
At all times Jane represented me well and consistently demonstrated great integrity in doing so.
Her capacity to relate all parties in a highly respectful manner and keep working toward a negotiated settlement rather than proceed directly to a highly litigious and adversarial process was outstanding.
Chartered Accountant, Toorak
Jane Ekin-Smyth is an intelligent, strategic and empathetic family lawyer.
I wanted someone who I could trust to articulate exactly what I wanted in an intelligent language I could understand whilst also feeling secure that my case was represented in the best possible way.
Jane delivered in every way.
Jane’s advice and approach was ultimately instrumental in the success of my relocation matter.
I would highly recommend Jane to anyone who is seeking a high level of service, support and understanding during an often extremely distressing period.
